Dream House

I fell hard for this ranch featured in the February issue of House Beautiful I usually try to keep this blog strictly about fashion and personal style but I can't resist showing you my dream house and how our personal style extends from us and how we choose to adorn ourselves to our homes and how we choose to adorn them. This remodel gave me a whole new view on ranch houses (my previous amour was the Old Victorian). Now I'm on the hunt for one in my hood. It's got a great loft like appeal, is warm and comfortable while still maintaining a spareness. The barn door is amazing. I have decided I must have one. Check out House Beautiful for more on the remodel and an interview with owner Amy Neunsinger. I for one am in Love.

I just got back from a great exhibit Rare Bird of Fashion : The Irreverent Iris Apfel at The P.E. M. aka the Peabody Essex Museum. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend the trip out to Salem, MA. My favorite guys from Patch NYC told me it was not to be missed and as usual I am happy I followed their advice.
How inspiring it was to see the creative force with which she chose her clothes and her accessories, she created works of art using her body as the canvas. Wearing brooches and bracelets as earrings and piles and piles of ethnic necklaces and bracelets with costume trinkets; combining vintage and thrift store finds with Haute Couture from all of the best fashion houses in Paris. She mixed different decades together paying no mind to the "it" items of the season. It shows when you have confidence in your style and are not afraid of weather or not "people" will like what your wearing, when you dress for yourself ( see my previous blog), you can inspire others to be free and independent too.
I for one am excited and inspired to go out and find more fabulous pieces to make my own.

What I'll Be Wearing

It all started with Vanessa Bruno's finery. I snapped up every piece I could get my hands on at my favorite boutique Dress, then started hunting down even more pieces from the collection online. After Vanessa came Isabel Marant, it was one of her classic belted shirt dresses that made me feel Oh So French and spurned my quest for more of her collection. I had seen the line years ago in Paris but had yet come across it in my neck of the woods. (Marant is strict with her stockists and doesn't allow them to sell online although, she has just signed off on selling her spring 2010 collection on famous online site Net a Porter ).
I finally found some fabulous things from the Fall 2009 collection at Alan Bilzarian in Newton and was lucky enough to grab a couple of her delicious pieces on sale. ( I am hoping that with her new Soho shop set to open in the spring and another favorite boutique of mine Looc awaiting shipment, her spring 2010 line won't be quite so hard to find.)
So, I decided with all these French love affairs I'm having I should be living in beautiful flat in Paris eating baguettes and brie, tooling through the streets on my bike with fresh flowers in my basket and wearing the pieces that epoitomize easy parisian chic.
Now a blast of reality, with two girls that need a bit more room than a flat has to offer and would hang me for making them leave their bffs behind , a dog who doesn't fit in a bicycle basket, and an ass that wouldn't fit into the clothes if I was eating bread and brie all day, the Paris dream seems a little less likely. It doesn't mean though that I can't still live out my French fashion fantasies right here in the burbs. Dress for who you are in what you love and it doesn't really matter where you are, within reason of course. If you're out milking the cows you may need to reconsider the dryclean only pieces. The idea though is not to let others dictate your style. Just because all the other Moms are wearing their Juicy Sweats and Uggs doesn't prevent me from throwing on something completely different that embodies my style, and when I catch them checking me out a.k.a staring at me like I'm a nut, at the PTC Spring Fling I take it as a compliment.

I have always struggled with belts for myself. I don't love the way they look on me but I want to. So I find myself forever on the lookout for a great belt to incorporate into my wardrobe. A recent Vanessa Bruno Dress purchase gave me the need to amp up my search. I wanted a belt that would give the dress, which is a very straight cut, a different look. I also didn't want to spend more than $50.00. Here is what I ended up with.

I LOVED my belt and how it looked with the dress. I paired it with my favorite Mayle knee high boots and some black tights, a great Kara Ross cuff and some Lizzie Fortunato earrings for a completely pulled together look. I can't wait to add some more belts to my closet and find new pieces to wear this great Gap belt with.

Spring Trends??

All my magazines are chatting up spring trends like leather shorts and military dressing and although it's easy to follow the fashion calendar and start thinking about spring outfits before even a blade of grass can be spotted, through the white landscape out your window, I plan on bucking the trend this year and taking full advantage of all my fall winter purchases and maybe even dip into some of the lovely sales that are calling to me from every street corner. With February knocking on the door and the lion of March still yet to roar all I want to do is perfect my cozy chic look which involves tights (not my favorite) and lots of layers.
